Pastor's Message

I was at the fitness center one Wednesday evening a couple of weeks ago and was talking with a fellow who is an active Baptist layman.  He confessed that he was “playing hooky” from church.  Then he looked at me with a puzzled look and said:  “What about you?” I told him we take a break from many of our activities on Wednesday evenings during the summer.  He said, “We probably should because attendance is way down.”

I hope our Wednesday evening summer break has given people a chance to rejuvenate a bit and get ready to re-group.  We have great dinners waiting for us, along with dynamic music ministry opportunities.  There are other spiritual growth activities for our children, youth and adults, including Bible studies and additional small groups.

This Wednesday evenin, August 24, is the ministry fair in the gym.  At that time, everyone has an opportunity to preview the offerings for the fall and sign up for those groups that need registration ahead of time.  The full range of programming will be available on the following Wednesday, August 31.

Don’t be caught at the fitness center, or anywhere else, on Wednesday night.  Come and give your faith a spiritual workout.

Jim

Ministry Fair and Wednesday Night Dinner

August 24

We are excited to kick off our Wednesday Night programming August 24 with a dinner and ministry fair.  Dinner will begin at 5:30 p.m. and will be followed by a ministry fair.  You will have the opportunity to learn about the various ways that we Love God, Experience Christ and Serve People through the ministries of the church.  We have a very strong slate of education opportunities this fall and we hope that you will check out a preview of the classes available for you to help you grow in the love and knowledge of God.

Parsonage Update

Spring and summer 2011 have brought many severe storms to the Fountain City area, and our church parsonage has been plagued with water issues.  With the last of these storms in June, we encountered our worst flooding yet.  We solicited the expertise of several contractors in our church to determine the best solution.

Upon review of our claim by the insurance company, we were told that approximately $8,450 of our claim would not be covered.  Repairs to the exterior foundation drain system are not covered by property insurance.  The remainder of our claim did however cover the replacement (again!) of carpet in the basement area.

Although we did not expect insurance funds to cover all expenses incurred, we were not prepared for a shortfall of this amount.  If you feel led to assist in overcoming this shortfall, (above and beyond your regular giving), we would welcome your gift.  If you have questions about the situation, please contact me at extension 109 or jpatterson@fountaincityumc.org.

Thank you,

John Patterson
